Vital Records

The Jackson County Department of Public Health serves as the Local Registrar for all births, deaths, and fetal deaths that occur in Jackson County.

The Department of Public Health receives all original certificates of birth, death, and fetal filed by the hospital, physicians, midwives, and funeral directors in our area. We examine each certificate to be sure that it is complete and accurate. If any certificate is incomplete or inaccurate, we make sure it is corrected before it is submitted to the Vital Records Branch and a copy issued to the Register of Deeds Office.  Once certificates are in proper order, a copy of each original is prepared for the Register of Deeds Office.  Certified copies must be obtained from the Register of Deeds or the Vital Records Branch in Raleigh for which a fee is charged.
